The Bureau for International Language Co-ordination (BILC), also known in French as Bureau de Coordination Linguistique Internationale (BCLI), is NATO’s advisory body focused on providing professional support within the field of language proficiency, language training, testing, and military terminology to NATO and its partner nations.

Our Mission
To promote interoperability among NATO and partner nations by standardizing language training, testing, and policy, while fostering knowledge exchange and best practices to support the Alliance’s objectives.
Our Strategies
- disseminate information on the latest developments in language learning, training, and testing
- improve language testing and assessment practices in NATO and partner nations to ensure alignment with the STANAG 6001 proficiency scale
- enhance assessment literacy among language professionals and stakeholders
- support language education within military contexts by providing specialized training programs
- foster the exchange of ideas and best practices among language professionals
Our Goals
- organize conferences, seminars, and workshops to provide ongoing professional development opportunities for teachers, testers, translators and terminologists
- establish and supports specialized working groups and special interest groups to address specific language requirements and challenges in language training and testing in the military context
- develop and maintain collaborative resources to support member nations in improving language training and testing (e.g. Shared Item Bank, military glossaries, etc.)
